With so many books and podcasts competing for your attention, it can be hard to know what's actually worth your time. In this section, our team shares honest, thoughtful reviews of the titles and episodes we've been reading and listening to, highlighting what stood out, what fell short, and whether they're truly worth the hype

Mini-Lit Review

A Review of Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

Like all historical fiction, I found this to be a difficult yet important read. At every page turn, I was reminded that even though these characters are fictional, their experiences most likely reflect those of Georgia Tann’s victims. It invokes feelings of profound sadness, yet is so well-written that you simply must read to the end.

A Review of Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

Like the best romantic comedies, Better Than the Movies is both delightfully funny and genuinely heartfelt. Beneath its witty banter and familiar tropes is a story about love, loss, and growing up that stays with you long after the final page. With a Netflix adaptation on the way, there's never been a better time to read it.

A Review of Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think by George Lakoff

Moral Politics offers a fascinating look at the moral frameworks that shape political beliefs. Rather than focusing on policy alone, George Lakoff explores why liberals and conservatives often see the same issues through entirely different lenses, making it a thought-provoking read regardless of where you fall politically.

ill-advised with Bill Nighy

The podcast, ill-advised with Bill Nighy, serves as a much-needed weekly breath of fresh air. The premise is simple: 25 minutes of Nighy, with the dry, sarcastic humour of Brits and the elegant tone and poise of Sir David Attenborough, address the mundane dilemmas of his audience members.

Nighy addresses his listeners’ questions of philosophy, nightlife, fashion, and relationships with an intellectual and satirical tone. Whether he is analyzing dog etiquette or the tastefulness of the colour yellow, his commentary is steeped with sophisticated sarcasm, which never ceases to entertain. The “high-brow” nature of the show does not come from pretension, but from Nighy’s conscious effort to mobilize dry humour to cut through the performative noise of social media and provide listeners with a moment of carefully crafted, genuine, and intelligent entertainment.

ill-advised reminds listeners not to take life too seriously and to take a necessary break from the fast-paced chaos of life in 2026.

Higher Learning with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay

If your ideal podcast can move from breaking down a political headline to debating the latest album release without missing a beat, Higher Learning with Van Lathan and Rachel Lindsay deserves a spot in your rotation. Every episode feels like joining two incredibly informed friends whose conversations are just as likely to make you think as they are to make you laugh.

Van and Rachel never shy away from difficult topics, but they also know when to lighten the mood. Whether they're unpacking current events, discussing Black culture, reacting to entertainment news, or sharing stories from their own lives, the podcast strikes an effortless balance between depth and humour. Their different perspectives keep conversations engaging, while their chemistry makes even disagreements enjoyable to listen to.

Higher Learning doesn't ask listeners to choose between staying informed and having a good time. It offers both, making each episode feel like an honest, wide-ranging conversation that's equal parts insightful, entertaining, and refreshingly real.

Good Hang with Amy Poehler

Good Hang with Amy Poehler is the kind of podcast that lives up to its title. Amy brings together actors, musicians, comedians, and other creative guests for conversations that feel relaxed, funny, and completely natural. Rather than following a typical interview format, each episode unfolds like two friends catching up, giving guests the space to be themselves.

One of the podcast's best episodes features Regina Hall, whose conversation with Amy is filled with constant laughter and effortless back-and-forth. They play off each other so naturally that it feels less like an interview and more like sitting in on a conversation between longtime friends. Episodes with guests like Billie Eilish also highlight the podcast's range, showing how Amy's warm, conversational style connects with people from every corner of the entertainment industry.

More than anything, Good Hang captures the magic of great chemistry. It feels less like listening to a podcast and more like pulling up a chair to a conversation you'd never want to leave.

IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson

IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson feels less like a traditional advice podcast and more like an honest conversation between siblings who happen to have lived extraordinary lives. Drawing on their own experiences, Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson tackle everything from relationships and careers to family dynamics and life's bigger uncertainties with warmth, humour, and remarkable sincerity.

While every episode offers something meaningful, some of the podcast's most memorable conversations feature guests such as Wanda Sykes, Will Ferrell, and Keke Palmer. Their humour, honesty, and unique perspectives complement the siblings' natural chemistry, creating episodes that are as entertaining as they are insightful. Rather than feeling like celebrity interviews, these conversations unfold naturally, blending practical advice with personal stories that resonate long after the episode ends.
